‘Allow vaccination of people based on need instead of age’: Sonia Gandhi writes to PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has urged the Prime Minster for early clearance of eligible vaccine candidates and exemption of GST for all equipment and medicines used in Covid treatment.
In her letter, Gandhi stated that she has taken a stock of the Covid situation in all states where the Congress is either in power or part of a ruling alliance.
Urging constructive cooperation, she said that several states are left with just 3-5 days of vaccines in stock.
“…it will also be prudent to allow emergency use authorisation of all the vaccine candidates that have the required clearances, without further delay” she wrote.
Sonia Gandhi also stressed the need for substantially ramping up domestic production capacity, while expanding the criteria to cover more people in the vaccination drive.
She pointed out that even ventilators, oximeters and oxygen cylinders currently attract GST, as do life-saving drugs like Remdesivir and Dexamethazone. She sought an exemption for all equipment, instruments and support infrastructure required to deal with Covid.
The Congress chief also mentioned about hardships likely to be faced by the daily wagers in the event of economic activities shrinking due to another lockdown. She appealed for a monthly guaranteed scheme to put Rs 6000 into the account of every eligible citizen.
Stating that reverse migration has once again started, she urged for seamless transportation for those travelling back to their home states.
